  40. Since 1989, i've programmed lots of astronomic softwares,
  41. and this who tracks the eclipses' solar maps was released
  42. last summer in two months on my Amiga 500 (not a compatible
  43. PC unfortunately) using GFABasic. I made the world's map,
  44. without any scanner, pixels by pixels ! And projects it on
  45. a sphere. Sorry, this software is till now private...
  46.  
  47. But the images are free available ! I've decided to follow
  48. the advice of Gary Murphy about the names of the files
  49. 'seclYYMM.gif' (secl for Solar ECLipse), because i plan to
  50. track lunar eclipses too (lecl for Lunar ECLipse) and i got
  51. some planetary occultations' maps by the moon (pocc for
  52. Planetary OCCultation by the moon).

  54. I have to retrieve all this images from my Amiga to install
  55. them on the net. It will take this and next weeks to do so.
  56. Be patient ! As soon as it will be done, i will warn you all
  57. and tell where there are available (by anonymous FTP).

  378. The CPU is the same box as the F-15.  I was told the code was written by
  379. IBM...at less then cost.  Honeywell and MDA, both out of Kennedy, did the
  380. "off-the-shelf" C&C SW and the command trailer.
  381. I clueless on what protocols are used during flight for telemetry, but I
  382. know that during the ground tests it's a FDDI with standard commercial
  383. protocols...
  384. Very little is operated manually during flight....  I watched one launch
  385. scenario from the command trailer while the bird reacted in the lab...  The
  386. primary operations are to monitor status and look for abort criteria...I
  387. also noticed a mission profile selection... But most C&C stuff was for
  388. ground testing.  They used Data Views (a User Interface Mgmt System) to
  389. develop the screens and run them on SG Workstations.  There's a mainframe
  390. which supports the data servers (I think they're VAXes, but I'm not
  391. sure...).  The screens look like a mixture of process control displays and
  392. RPV controls....  Lots of graphics and animation....  It really made me
  393. sick...  We've been working towards that on SSF for 5 long slow years while
  394. they pulled it off in less then 18 months.....

  547. difference in atmospheric pressure could cause a _big_ difference in
  548. course.  You need a stage-to-orbit system sufficiently robust to
  549. reliably operate after a launch of ~10,000 gs and burning through
  550. the _lower_ atmosphere at orbital velocity.

  608. Recent analysis by Dr. E. Myles Standish from JPL indicates that Planet X does
  609. not exist.  Astronomers for over half a century have been searching for
  610. Planet X based on what appeared to be irregularities in the orbits of
  611. Uranus and Neptune.  However, when the extremely accurate measurements
  612. of the mass of Neptune made by the Voyager 2 flyby in 1989 are
  613. inserted in the equations, these irregularities vanish.  The mass of
  614. Neptune is now known to be off by five-tenths of 1 percent.  When
  615. the new value for Neptune's mass is factored into the equations, the orbits
  616. of the outer planets are shown to be moving as expected, going all the
  617. way back to the early 1800's.  The results of Dr. Standish's analysis are
  618. published in the May issue of The Astronomical Journal.

  662. No one that I know of posts the IAU circulars, though occasionally excerpts are
  663. posted.

  665. The reason is that  the subscription fee for the circulars is the main funding
  666. source for the circulars. IF the circulars become widely available for free,
  667. the funding dries up, and the service will become endangered, if not 
  668. untenable.

  670. It costs about $150/year to get the circulars. You may find them listed on 
  671. some BBSs, but IMO it's unethical to post them.

  727. Sorry to jump in here, but there is an explanation for this behavior, which
  728. may not be covered by Dennis' analysis.   Whether this explanation is
  729. true is open to question, as it is only the most sensical (IMHO) interpre-
  730. tation for the write-off.  As far as I know, GM hasn't provided a reason,
  731. so we just have to figure it out.   Anyway, here's the (not original) idea;
  732.  
  733. GM, expecting new Clinton taxes, took a huge loss this year, which they
  734. will be able to forward, as capital loss deductions, for several years.
  735. (They also recently 'paid' a lot of their pension-plan money out for the
  736. same reason)  So they are protecting future profits from increased taxation.
  737. In other words, they can turn one pretty bad year into a dozen really
  738. good years, especially since the Saturn line can improve or sell better
  739. during those following years, the profits for which can be totally protected.
  740.  
  741. Point being, the US tax system, because gov uses it to coerc... I mean,
  742. provide 'incentives', has become a punitive/subsidy system, so actions
  743. taken while under it's influence aren't necessarily indicative of market
  744. influences.  So, judgements about how GM's behavior relates to the question
  745. of cost vs. return probably aren't very meaningful, for this case.

  780. That won't solve the problem of hitting a tiny target area hundreds of
  781. thousands of kms away.  The drive coils provide the acceleration and coarse
  782. aiming.  To correct deviations from the ideal velocity vector, you add some
  783. fine correction coils, and perhaps some really fine correction system (like
  784. the lasers).
